Rugby is often commended, usually by itself, for the amount of respect that players show to referees. However on some occasions that can go out the window like this horrendous attack on a referee from France.
Football is supposedly a gentleman's sport played by thugs whilst rugby is supposed to be a thugs sport played by gentleman.
Probably one of the worst things in sport is when rugby fans get all high and mighty about how the behaviour of football players would never happen in the egg shaped ball sports, be it union or league.
Even rugby players can't ignore a chance to take a dig at footballers.
It didn't take long for fans of 'ruggers' to jump all over Alexis Sanchez' bitten lip, maybe not to do with a referee but the perfect excuse for rugby to be all smarky about a footballer not being as tough as a rugby player.
However one moment that rugby fans can't get on their high horse about happened in the French Rugby League Cup where a player knocked the referee clean out, no gentleman is doing this:
The incident happened in the match between Saint-Estève and Toulouse when a Saint-Estève player was sent off. His reaction was to 'one bomb' the referee, completely needless.
When opposition players go to question him about his frankly atrocious actions he starts throwing punches at them too, resulting in a brawl!
Of course one of the only things as annoying as rugby fans acting all high and mighty is when football fans, who normally hate it, do the same back when an incident like this happens.
It's downright disgusting from the player!
