Sky Sports forced to apologise after Scott Williams jokes about England beating Germany in 'two World Wars'

Scott Williams beat Germany's Martin Schindler at the World Darts Championship.

Sky Sports were forced to apologise for Scott Williams' controversial post-match interview following his thrilling victory over Martin Schindler.

Williams, who attempted a 'no-look 180' in round one, beat Schindler 4-3 on Wednesday to book his spot in the next round of the World Darts Championship.

The Englishman thanked the crowd at Alexandra Palace after winning a deciding set against his German opponent.

But his speech has been slammed as he bizarrely joked about England winning 'two World Wars and one World Cup' over Germany.

Speaking to Sky Sports, he said: “What a game! I’m so happy to get to the other side as the winner as well. Martin bought the fight and I was not expecting to go all the way to sudden death as well. I’m knackered, I’m absolutely knackered.

“I’ve never had the crowd on my side like that. I know we won two World Wars and one World Cup. The German fans here were huge as well.”

He added: "Martin will be absolutely gutted he’s lost the game in the end but for all the people watching, they’re going to be so happy about what they saw there."

Sky Sports presenter Anna Woolhouse apologised for the use of 'offensive language' after the interview.

Darts fans on social media also condemned Williams' post-match interview.

One X user wrote: "Not Scott Williams referencing world wars after beating a German in the darts? Embarrassing. Simply embarrassing."

A second tweeted: "There’s no way Scott Williams has just said I know we’ve won 2 World Wars and 1 World Cup live onstage."

A third added: "2 World Wars and one World Cup?! This Scott Williams is a right c**t."

A fourth said: "Scott Williams referencing two world wars and one world cup after beating a German is a perfect example of why us British are hated."

The 33-year-old will face the winner of Damon Heta vs. Barry van Peer in the last-16.
