A pool star hit an astonishing shot at the Mosconi Cup that left both the commentators and fans stunned.

The Mosconi Cup is one of the biggest competitions in professional pool, pitting Europe against the United States in a Ryder Cup-style format.

After its launch in 1994, the American team dominated the early editions, but the Europeans have been much stronger in recent years, winning the past five tournaments.

This year's edition will be held at the Alexandra Palace in London, with the competition running from December 3 to December 6.

At the Ally Pally in 2023, the Mosconi Cup was the scene for one of the rarest shots ever witnessed in pool.

European star David Alcaide sank the brown ball into a pocket, only for it to bounce back onto the table, leaving everyone in disbelief.

The commentator said: "It actually seemed to start going below ground and then pop its head up again.

"That is absolutely incredible.

"You might see that once in ten million shots, if even that!"

Despite the unusual shot, the Spaniard was unfazed and went on to defeat America's Shane Wolford, helping Europe secure the Mosconi Cup.

Mosconi Cup 2025

Team Europe come into this year's edition aiming for a sixth consecutive title and will be strong favourites.

Matchroom Sport chairman Eddie Hearn has high hopes for the action at the Alexandra Palace.

He said: “The Mosconi Cup is the biggest party in sport and you can bet that Ally Pally will be absolutely rocking in December.

“Team Europe has dominated over the past five years. But Team USA will be desperate to finally roll back the years and take all the glory.

“High-octane drama and an intense battle between the two five-man teams awaits. Do not miss it.”

The competition is broadcast on Sky Sports in the UK and Ireland, while WNT TV will show the action in the United States.

Tickets are still available for the Alexandra Palace, with prices starting from £50 for a day of action.

Mosconi Cup Format

There are a maximum of 20 matches to be played across the four days, with the first team to record eleven victories claiming the Mosconi Cup.

  • Day 1: One team match, two doubles matches and one singles match.
  • Day 2: Three doubles and two singles matches.
  • Day 3: Two doubles and three singles matches.
  • Day 4: One doubles match, followed by five singles games to conclude the event

However, in recent years, the competition has not produced dramatic finales, with Europe winning 11-3 in 2023, and 11-6 in America last time out.
