A Norwegian Olympic athlete broke down in tears after he admitted to cheating on his girlfriend in an interview after winning a bronze medal.

The 2026 Winter Olympics are now well underway in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy, with several nations already picking up medals.

At the time of writing, Norway lead the medals table with 11, including six gold medals, while Team Great Britain are yet to pick up a single medal at the Games.

On Tuesday, Norwegian biathlete Sturla Holm Laegreid further added to his nation's medal tally as he picked up bronze in the Men's 20km Individual race.

But it wasn't his performance in the event that surprised viewers, as the 28-year-old later broke down in tears as he confessed to cheating on his girlfriend ahead of competing in Italy.

Despite securing a medal in his event, it wasn't feelings of happiness that overcame Laegreid following the Men's 20km Individual race, as he broke down in tears admitting has had been unfaithful to his girlfriend of six months.

Speaking to Norwegian broadcaster NRK, via the Daily Mail, Laegreid confessed: "There's someone I wanted to share this with who might not be watching today.

"Six months ago, I met the love of my life and the most beautiful and kindest person in the world. And three months ago I made my biggest mistake and cheated on her," he admitted.

The Olympic medallist went on to reveal that he had told his girlfriend about his actions a week prior, saying that since the confession he has endured the worst week of his life.

"I had a gold medal in my life...I only have eyes for her," Laegreid claimed.

"I don't know what I want to achieve by saying this, but sports have been in a different line in recent days. So I wish I could share it with her."

Breaking down in tears, the biathlete admitted that he had to stand up and admit when he had done something against his morals, especially as he wanted to be seen as a good role model for those watching.

Eventually, he was able to calm down and explain why exactly he decided to use his time in the media spotlight to speak so candidly about his personal life.

He added: "You never know how many chances you get, and I don't think I'll get another chance at true love as I had with her. But I'm willing to do anything.

"I am willing to drop a nuclear bomb on NRK and commit social suicide and be hated by everyone. Because I am already hated by her, and I hope that maybe it can make her realise how much I love her."

Lægreid went on to reveal that he had only decided to make his public confession the night before the big event, having already spoken about it with some of his Olympic teammates.

Before the race, he had admitted that he saw himself as an underdog and didn't expect to be taking home a medal, but an impressive accuracy of 19 targets hit from 20 shots saw him take bronze behind Eric Perrot of France and national teammate Johan-Olav Botn.
