Lewis Hamilton won his third home Grand Prix at Silverstone for the third year in a row and reduced the gap at the top of the Driver's Championship down to four points after Nico Rosberg finished second.

World champion Hamilton started the race in pole position and because of rain that hit the track not long before the race it started behind the safety car for the first few laps.

As soon as it went in the three time world champ opened up a three second gap to his teammate Rosberg before most of the field pitted for intermediate tyres.

From there it was pretty easy for the Brit with himself, Rosberg and Max Verstappen all swapping fastest laps and lowering and extending gaps between them kept changing.

Rosberg did start to close the gap to Hamilton in the latter parts of the race but with just a handful of laps remaining he had a gear box problem and had to settle for second place with teenager Verstappen getting the third place on the podium.

Mercedes and championship leader Rosberg will be under investigation for communication over the team radio about what mode the driver should go into. He could yet be disqualified from the race, lose 10 seconds from his race time or given a grid penalty for the next race in Austria.

It was a perfect day for the home driver as he chases down his teammate in the race to be this year's World champion.

For the other Brits, Jenson Button finished just outside the points in 11th and Jolyon Palmer had a terrible race with his team forgetting to put his right rear tyre on during a pit-stop, getting a stop go penalty for that and then having to retire.
