Michael van Gerwen sent a classy message to Luke Littler after losing the Bahrain Darts Masters final.

The Dutchman, a three-time PDC world champion, was facing the 16-year-old for the first time on the senior tour after missing out on a spot in the World Championship final.

But despite beating Rob Cross and Michael Smith on his way to the showpiece event in Bahrain, 'Mighty Mike' lost 8-5 to Littler to finish as runner-up.

Van Gerwen showed glimpses of his top form, including taking out a 105 checkout to break Littler's throw at 5-4, but lost the final three legs of the match in Bahrain.

And although naturally disappointed to lose out on another ranking event title, Van Gerwen had some kind words for Littler - who takes home £20,000 as the winner - in his post-match interview.

Speaking to ITV's Dan Dawson, the world number two admitted: "Of course, it's never going to be a good week when I'm not winning, it's as simple as that. Luke had a fantastic tournament as well.

"I couldn't produce what I was doing in the other games, and you punish yourself. That's how sport works, you've got to live with that and you've got to make sure you get better for the next one.

"Of course I'm disappointed, but that's the way sport works. You win some, you lose some. I'll get him, don't worry!"

He added: "Everyone says he's a new kid, but everyone knows what he's capable of.

"The crowds, the television, everyone wants to make him bigger. But he's already a good player.

"I know you all want to push him, but let him grow. Let him do his thing. You have to learn, the crowd has to learn, and everyone involved with television has to learn.

"Don't push him too much. Of course we know he's a good player. But give him his time and everything will come, no problem."

Van Gerwen then exited the stage after sharing a handshake with 'The Nuke', who is now a ranking title winner for the first time on the senior PDC tour.
