Well, this is a first.

A professional baseball player has left viewers stunned after a phone fell out of his pocket during the middle of a game.

During a clash with the Arizona Diamondbacks, Rodolfo Castro of the Pittsburgh Pirates was sliding to get to a base when his white iPhone 13 came flying out of his pocket and landed on the field.

Not realising what had happened, Castro looked around to see if he could make another quick dart to the next base.

But rather hilariously, the umpire subtly tapped him on the shoulder and pointed down to the phone before Castro quickly scampered to retrieve it.

Overall, it made for amusing scenes, but also pretty questionable.

I mean, why would you have your phone in your pocket while playing a professional sport?

Seems strange and MLB fans clearly agree.

When footage of the wild incident surfaced on social media, people were quick

Fox Sports tweeted: "Rodolfo Castro was safe at third, his phone was not."

Another added: "I've never seen that before."

While a third joked: "Swiping extra bases and swiping right on Tinder mid-game."

It's understood the MLB have launched a formal investigation into the matter as it remains unknown whether Castro will be disciplined for the rather embarrassing move.

A red-faced Castro was then forced to face the media who, as expected, only had one question on the tip of their tongues.

"I don't think there's any professional ballplayer that would ever go out there with any intentions of taking a cell phone," Castro told reporters.

"It's horrible it happened to me. Obviously, it was very unintentional."

He added: “My first day back, if I was to be the centre of attention, I would want it to be helping the team win, but never in this form.

“This is definitely something that was an accident, a mistake, something I’m going to learn from. But definitely something I didn’t mean to happen.’’
