Washington’s FedExField Stadium has been branded a “death trap” following a frightening stand collapse after an NFL game on Sunday.

The incident occurred after Washington hosted Philadelphia in their Week 17 clash, which ended in a 20-16 win for the Eagles.

Following the match, Philadelphia quarterback Jalen Hurts made his way off the field and was heading down the tunnel when a barrier holding back Eagles fans collapsed.

Several supporters were thrown over the edge of the stand and onto Hurts, who fortunately appeared to be unharmed.

Hurts then helped the fans get back to their feet, with some taking the opportunity to celebrate the win with the 23-year-old.

Video of the incident has circulated on social media, with many fans astonished at the lack of safety for both spectators and players.

Twitter user Ben Natan wrote: “FedEx Field is a death trap. Players and fans both seriously at risk with stuff like this.”

Another user, Dallas Cowboys fan es3_09, joked: “Gonna have to start bringing our own guard railings to that dump of a stadium over there in Washington.”

Meanwhile, NFL analyst Warren Sharp has criticised Washington owner Daniel Snyder.

“Dan Snyder’s stadium is garbage,” he wrote.

The Washington Football Team has been planning to move to a new stadium since 2016, according to reports in the US.

Snyder has confirmed the team is working on “big plans” and intend to move into a new home by 2027.

"We're touring stadiums," he told TMZ last year ahead of a tour of stadiums in California.

"We're coming (to the) West Coast and touring, about 12 of us, looking to build a new venue back home, in D.C. or Maryland.

“So we're everywhere… looking at the future. We're making big plans. Coming soon to Washington."
