An altercation took place in the UFC Octagon as a fighter attempted to punch his opponent after losing the bout against him.

Noche UFC 3 took place yesterday at the Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Texas, as one of the MMA franchise's Fight Night events.

The headline fight was a featherweight bout between Brazilian pair Diego Lopes and Jean Silva.

Former UFC Featherweight Championship challenger Lopes emerged victorious in the fight following a stoppage with a technical knockout in the second round.

A spinning back elbow and punches from Lopes secured victory over Silva to notch his 27th victory from 34 professional MMA bouts.

Silva's professional MMA record now stands at 16 wins from 19 matches, as Lopes inflicted only the third loss of his career.

Speaking the post-fight press conference, Lopes was a happy man and revealed how in the build-up to the bout, he was focused on ensuring it would not go the full five rounds.

He said: "I feel amazing, I've worked a lot for this and now I've finished the job.

"I thought the whole week I would finish this fight and it would not go to five rounds."

After the fight, however, tensions rose in the Octagon as Silva reacted to his defeat following the stoppage.

As he was being treated for a bleeding temple, Silva rose to his feet after Lopes appeared to say something to his fellow Brazilian's corner in the fight's aftermath.

Silva immediately jumped up and rose his fist as if to be preparing to punch Lopes as he walked away.

However, Silva was blocked by UFC security guards in the Octagon to prevent any further blows from being landed.

The build-up to the fight saw attempts from Silva to destabilise Lopes, including leaving a note for him on the weigh-in scales.

There was also numerous predictions from Silva's team that he would beat Lopes, and this continued during the fight even though it was clear the direction it was going.

After admitting he was surprised by the 'punch' attempt, Lopes also explained that Silva's corner were trash talking to him before he entered the Octagon, and so he made his feelings clear to the defeated parties.

He said: "I'm surprised with this, that he tried to punch the back of my head. I don't understand why.

"But it's okay, this is maybe the emotion of the time because this guy has lost the fight.

"After the fight I go to face his training partners and I showed my feelings towards these guys."

Reacting on social media, MMA fans have made their displeasure at Silva's behaviour clear, with some even calling to Dana White to remove him from the UFC.

One wrote: "Kick him out."

Another posted: "Unprofessional and classless!"

One fan said: "He should be penalized for that."

And another MMA fan wrote: "He made fun of people, now he can't handle the get back."
