Conor McGregor has previously spoken about the much-anticipated UFC bout between Jon Jones and Tom Aspinall.

Earlier this week, it was reported that Jones vs Aspinall had been agreed and that an official announcement was going to be made soon.

However, on Wednesday morning, it was claimed that Jones has now pulled out of the fight, meaning Aspinall will take to the Octagon with another fighter in June.

As reported by UFC legend Chael Sonnen, Aspinall will face former title challenger Ciryl Gane to defend his interim heavyweight belt at UFC 317 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on June 28.

Sonnen added that the winner of the Aspinall vs Gane fight in June would then go on to fight Jones for the title at the end of the year once the champion feels that he is ready to compete.

Back in November 2024, McGregor took to social media to comment on the potential bout between Jones and Aspinall.

The Irishman was spotted reacting to a clip which showed Aspinall sparring with Glory Kickboxing champion Rico Verhoeven.

McGregor claimed the clip is "good footage for Jones to watch" and he himself has "warmed" to the idea of the two squaring off.

In a post which he swiftly deleted, McGregor wrote: "That footage of him looking woeful vs Rico Verhoeven is good footage to watch for Jon. I've warmed to this matchup. I think it should happen."

UFC boss Dana White said at the time that Jones vs Aspinall will "probably be the biggest fight we’ve ever done" but McGregor scoffed at that, simply writing: "Now, now" in response.

Reacting to the latest development of Jones vs Aspinall, one fan said on social media: "nterim is absolutely INSANE. Aspinall is the champ. This is all nonsense."

Another tweeted: "This might go down as the worst year in UFC history if this is true."

A third fan added: "That doesn't make any sense. Why is he going to defend the interim title? Just make it a fight for the undisputed championship and unify the belts."

Someone else wrote: "Why interim? Make it an undisputed title."
