Tommy Fleetwood's wife admits enormous age gap has caused issues ever since they got together

Professional golfer Fleetwood is married to his now-manager Clare, having tied the knot back in 2017.

Tommy Fleetwood’s wife, Clare, has opened up about the challenges the couple have faced throughout their relationship due to their 23-year age gap.

Tommy, 34, and Clare, 57, met in 2015 before getting married two years later and have since had a son.

The 57-year-old initially worked as an agent for Fleetwood before their romance blossomed. She is now the golfer’s manager and deals with everything from PR, accounts, and sponsorships to logistics and travel.

And the pair will, no doubt, be in a celebratory mood at present, given the fact that Tommy secured his first PGA Tour title on his 164th attempt when he won the Tour Championship on Sunday evening.

The 34-year-old secured the title on the final putt to secure the FedEx Cup and a $10m (£7.4m) prize.

"When you've lost so many times, a three-shot lead down the last doesn't feel like that many," said an emotional Fleetwood shortly after his triumph.

Fleetwood is just the second English player to win the Tour Championship after Justin Rose did it back in 2018.

Following his victory, fans were keen to find out more about Fleetwood’s personal life.

And several supporters will have realised the unusual age gap between Tommy and his wife, Clare.

As reported by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) in 2024, the average age gap for UK marriages was around two to three years, with men tending to be the older when getting married, the opposite of the pair’s situation.

In 2023, Clare opened up about the challenges the pair faced due to their age gap during an appearance on Performance People.

"People who were the doubters have redeemed themselves, let's say, and admittedly doubted wrongly,” the 57-year-old explained.

“It was kind of not actually [a big deal] for us, but it was just again thinking what other people are thinking about all the time and within the industry.

“It was kind of big news in our circle, so I was a little bit paranoid about all that, really. But not for any reason of our relationship, and I had full faith once we fell in love.”

And despite being happily married in 2025, she even rejected Fleetwood’s initial approach.

Clare added: “We've got a 23-year age difference. Of course, I turned him down. I was like, 'Don't be stupid.’"

Tommy appeared in the same interview and said that his now-wife “eventually gave in” despite the initial rejection.

He said: “Well, she just eventually gave in, I think, and thought, ‘I'll just give him some time. I'll give him the time of day and then we'll go from there.’ I didn't mess up.'”
