Scottie Scheffler faces losing nearly half of £2.3million prize money after winning The Open

The American golfer won The Open in Royal Portrush with a score of 17 under par.

Scottie Scheffler could lose nearly half of his £2.3 million prize money after winning The Open at Royal Portrush.

After four spectacular rounds at the Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland, world no.1 Scheffler won The Open with a total score of 267, which is 17 under par.

Winning The Open means that the American has just one major left to win if he wants to achieve the golf career grand slam, the US Open.

It also means that he can add another $3.1m (£2.3m) to what will already be a massive amount of career earnings throughout a career that has seen him win four majors.

However, that doesn't mean that Scheffler will take home all of the prize money, as he is set to lose nearly half of the total earnings won at The Open.

The total prize pool for The Open this year was $17m (£12.7m), with the winner's share unchanged from the totals on offer at the 2024 Open at Royal Troon in Scotland.

Players who finished in the top three will be given over $1m (£745,000) each, while a top seven finish guarantees a prize pool of more than $500,000 (£372,850) each.

However, anyone taking home prize money from The Open will of course be subject to UK tax laws, significantly reducing the amount that they will take home.

In the UK, any income of over £125,140 is subject to an additional tax rate of 45%.

Therefore for Scheffler, who has won significantly more than this £125,140, he will have to pay a massive $1.39m (£1.07m) of tax on his earnings, taking his total prize down to $1.71m (£1.27m)

However, after paying the 45% tax in the UK, Scheffler will be able to offset that amount against their U.S. tax liability using Form 1116 when filing with the IRS.

Scheffler currently lives in a property in Dallas, Texas alongside his wife Meredith Scudder and their son Bennett, who turned one earlier this year.

After being awarded with the historic Claret Jug, Scheffler thanks his family, the staff at The Open and the fans, despite the fact that they were clearly supporting local hero Rory McIlroy throughout the weekend.
