Williams will have 'entirely new car' as drastic action planned ahead of British GP

Williams boss James Vowles has declared that his team are deploying major changes to completely overhaul their car after a tough start to the 2026 season.

Having spent 2025 climbing through the ranks to be the 'best of the rest' behind the mighty top four, Williams has fallen behind its competitors in the Formula 1 2026 season.

With just 11 points on the board as F1 completed one-third of the races this season, only the disastrous Aston Martin and the newly-added Audi and Cadillac sit beneath Williams in the Constructors' championship standings.

Surpassed by Haas, Racing Bulls, and Alpine, the iconic British team has left its star drivers in a near-impossible place, with a car that simply isn't competitive.

But team principal Vowles has claimed that the first of many planned upgrades is coming for their home race at Silverstone this week, and by Baku, it will be a completely new car.

Williams boss promises 'entirely new car' with drastic upgrades

So far, it's only been Ferrari that has deployed mass upgrades to its car, as teams continue to wrap their head around the new regulations in the post-DRS era.

Ferrari has raised a lot of eyebrows, though, as Mercedes' Toto Wolff has claimed that the Italian side will 'run out of money, surely' after deploying a string of big changes.

One of the next teams to go big on upgrades is Williams, as Vowles has promised massive changes to the extremely lacklustre car.

"I think [the heat] is one of the big reasons why you've seen us fall back a bit,” he told Sky Germany.

“Our upgrade plans - we've got what I call a medium-sized for Silverstone, so just in one week's time, and then there'll be small bits for Spa. Budapest, small bits as well."

“Then slightly bigger elements, including weight reduction, to Zandvoort.

"And then really for us, it's almost an entirely new car for Baku. So that's really the time period that we're waiting for.”

Baku will mark a major milestone for Williams as one of the key tracks that launched their 2025 campaign, with Carlos Sainz securing his second podium for the team by delivering a massive drive on the brutal street track.

With an experienced duo like Sainz and Alex Albon behind the wheels, Williams would benefit tenfold from having a competitive car, one that won't leave their Spanish driver hoping to scrap the team system entirely.
