Although it appears a retirement isn't coming anytime in the near future, it's been reported that Red Bull are already preparing for the possibility of Verstappen's departure as they've identified their ideal replacement.
As reported by Motorsport, Piastri is firmly on Red Bull's radar and is viewed as a "Plan B" option from team principal Laurent Mekies and Red Bull's head of motorsport, Oliver Mintzlaff.
With Verstappen's future in Formula One a topic of constant debate, it is believed that Red Bull want to be ready to make a swift move for Piastri should their four-time world champion walk away from the sport.
Ever since it became clear that Piastri was challenging for the 2025 Formula One world title, the Australian has been tipped to join any of the top teams in the sport.
Rumours surrounding Piastri's McLaren exit only intensified throughout 2025 as tensions between him and McLaren flared up due to the rivalry between him and teammate and title rival Lando Norris.
Since the end of the 2025 season it appeared that these rumours had died down as drivers and teams across the grid adjust to the new regulations introduced at the start of the year.
But now it appears they are resurfacing with works to see Piastri take the no.1 seat at Red Bull now stirring under the radar.
That being said, Red Bull's official line remains clear that Verstappen will remain with the team through 2027, with Isack Hadjar seen as an investment for the future, not an immediate guarantee.
