Toto Wolff was once offered the chance to sign Esteban Ocon alongside Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes, and the reason the Frenchman was rejected speaks volumes.
After rumours of a 'physical altercation' with team principal Ayao Komatsu, Haas dropped Ocon and replaced him with Ryo Hirakawa for last weekend's Mexican Grand Prix. Although he instantly denied clashing with Komatsu physically, an argument ultimately led to the 30-year-old losing his race seat for the remainder of the 2026 F1 season.
Haas officially confirmed the news in a statement on Tuesday (November 4), revealing that Ferrari junior and Formula 2 standings leader Rafael Camara will take his place and make his Grand Prix debut in Sao Paulo.

Why Mercedes principal Toto Wolff rejected Esteban Ocon
Across a decade-long career in F1, Ocon has created a reputation for clashing with teammates, including in 2024 when his fractious relationship with then-Alpine teammate Pierre Gasly became even worse when they crashed into one another at Monaco.

"Esteban’s attack was completely out of context,” then-Alpine boss Bruno Famin said of the incident. “It was exactly what we didn’t want to see.”
That is one of several moments that have soured Ocon's reputation over the years, and it's this character that arguably cost him the chance of joining Mercedes seven years ago.
Having famously graduated through the Mercedes young driver programme, the F1 giants took him on as a reserve driver in 2019 after he lost his Force India seat at the end of 2018.
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff even considered putting Ocon in the race team alongside Lewis Hamilton. "One day he will win races and championships in a Mercedes," Wolff said at the time when asked about the Frenchman's chance to succeed in the sport.
But ultimately, Wolff decided against pairing Ocon with the legendary Hamilton as, according to BBC Sport's Andrew Benson, it was thought 'their characters would clash,' and their 'relationship would be too combustible'.
Valtteri Bottas was instead retained for 2020 and, at the same time, George Russell was excelling for Williams. Based on the data they had on both, Mercedes concluded that Russell was their guy for the future over Ocon.
Esteban Ocon's reputation made Haas staff feel uneasy
In that one moment when his character and ability were analysed, Ocon's career as a potential candidate for a top team ended.
The experienced driver will now, in all likelihood, not compete in 2027, and it remains to be seen where his career goes from here.
It will be difficult for him to bounce back in any case because, before joining Haas in 2025, some weren't convinced about his arrival.
As caught on camera by the Netflix series Drive to Survive, one Haas staff member said: "Are you fully, 100% sure that Ocon is a good fit for us?"
Ironically, the man who he clashed with at the American team, Komatsu, was defiant in his backing of Ocon.
"The main [thing] for me is his work ethic,” replied Komatsu. “You can see he can race. So, I’m pretty confident he was the best choice.”
