'Mind games' - Kimi Antonelli hits back at George Russell over F1 title prediction

The teenage Italian racing driver is leading the way in what is only his second Formula 1 season.

Kimi Antonelli insists he won't get drawn into mind games after Mercedes teammate George Russell claimed the Formula 1 World Championship title was already his to lose.

The Italian leads the way with an enormous 66-point lead in the 2026 standings, having achieved five wins and six podiums from the first six races of the season.

Russell is the only other driver to win a Grand Prix this season, with Lewis Hamilton the only other driver to have been on the podium three times.

Heading into the Monaco Grand Prix weekend, Russell stated the World Championship was 'his to lose' in reference to teammate Antonelli. He backed it up with another victory, though he isn't getting carried away by the prospect when there is still so much left of the season.

“It’s not the first time we’ve seen mind games. People always try to shift the pressure onto their opponent, whether it’s an external rival or a team-mate – it doesn’t make much difference. Fortunately, those things don’t really affect me,” Antonelli told Motorsport.com.

“We’re still only in the first third of the season, and I think it’s definitely too early to start talking about a title showdown. I’m working race by race.

“Of course, at the end of each weekend I take a look at the standings, but immediately afterwards my focus is already on the next race. When I lower the visor and head out on track, I’m not thinking about the championship. I race to do the best job possible. And, as I’ve already said, since I haven’t won anything yet, I have nothing to lose.”

Instead, the 19-year-old put the pressure back on his Mercedes teammate when he claimed Russell was the 'complete package' and had rightfully been named the 'clear favourite' at the start of the season.

He added: “The goal is to win as many races as possible and, as a consequence, the championship. I’m aware that opportunities like this don’t come along often, but at the same time I’m still the underdog, and that’s a position I don’t mind. Before the season started, everyone saw George as the clear favourite, and I think that prediction was justified. He has the complete package required to fight for the title, including the experience.”

Although he will have to get used to fielding questions about a potential World Championship victory, the teenager is focused on the task at hand and well aware that he has plenty of work to do.

“I believe I can still improve in many areas,” Antonelli continued. “There’s no denying that these victories have given me a lot of confidence, but at the same time I know I have to keep working hard to unlock my full potential. And that’s exactly what motivates me. I don’t think many people expected a start to the season like this, considering this is only my second year in Formula 1.

“It’s possible that, together with my young age, this leads some people to believe there’s still plenty of room for improvement. Maybe that’s also why George sees me as a particularly dangerous rival in the fight for the world championship.”

Watch every race live with Sky Sports

Sky are currently running an offer that allows existing Sky TV customers to add the Sky Sports F1 channel for just £15 a month, on a 31-day rolling contract. The races are coming thick and fast as F1 heads to Europe with the Barcelona and Austrian GPs later in the month. We then head to Silverstone and the much-anticipated British GP on July 5, before trips to Belgium and Hungary. And it’s not just about the races themselves, of course. Sky Sports F1 is the only place you can watch every F1 practice and qualifier live. You’ll also benefit from behind-the-scenes access, exclusive interviews and world-class analysis, both on a race weekend and in standalone shows like The Notebook with Ted Kravitz and The F1 Show. On top of all that, Sky Sports customers can also stream any of the F1 action live from their phone or tablet via the Sky Sports app.
