Formula One confirm major overhaul that will impact entire race calendar as statement released

The FIA has confirmed major changes to the 2027 Formula One calendar that will see the distance of every race shortened.

With 14 race weekends now in the books and Kimi Antonelli looking like he is all but certain to win the Drivers' Championship, Formula One fans have already started looking ahead to the 2027 season.

Formula One next year is likely to look very different to the sport in its current state, with a number of drivers out of contract, but now new changes that have been announced will see every race next year reduced by two to three laps.

FIA confirm major changes to F1 race distances

On Monday, the F1 Commission held a meeting in London to discuss various topics ahead of the 2027 season.

As a part of these discussions, the sport's decision makers agreed to reduce Grand Prix distances from 305km to 290km, translating to between two to three laps depending on the race.

The reasoning behind the decision is due to the fact that fuel flow rates will be increased next season in response to the backlash to the new regulations introduced ahead of the 2026 season.

This increased fuel flow rate would have in turn meant more fuel was requirted to complete the same race distance as before, leading all teams to agree that changes had to be made to avoiud them being forced to increase the size of their fuel tanks

In a statement, the FIA said: "In line with the refinements to the Power Unit regulations to be introduced in 2027 on fuel flow, a reduction in the total race distance from 305km to 290km was approved, corresponding to a reduction of two or three laps."

Although the change isn't yet confirmed, it is almost certain that it will be, with the only remaining task being approval by the World Motor Sport Council, which shouldn't be an issue when they meet again virtually on October 15.

The only race that won't be impacted by the change is the Monaco Grand Prix, which has recently been confirmed as a sprint race host for next year, as it already runs to a season-low distance of 260km.

Formula One set for second change to 2027 season impacting all races

And that's not all, as the FIA have also decided to remove the three-hour time limit for races that are halted for whatever reason.

As it stands, there is a two-hour limit for actual racing alongside a three-hour total time for any race once stoppages for factors like weather are considered.

This three-hour limit will no longer be in place in 2027, but the two-hour race limit will remain.

The FIA said that the decisions were taken "to ensure that the spectators have the best possible chance to enjoy a full race if disruptions occur."

Alongside these changes the FIA stated that there will be "greater flexibility to extend Free Practice sessions should they be interrupted."

Currently, practice sessions can only be extended on Sprint weekends, but iot seems this may also be possible on normal race weekends next year.

Gearbox homologation for 2027 has also been removed, while a number of other minor unspecified tweaks to 2027 technical regulations were confirmed.
