Wrexham's Turf Pub forced to close its doors after club secured historic promotion to EFL

Wrexham secured promotion and the demand to celebrate at the Turf pub, where Paul Rudd had been earlier on, was incredible.

The iconic Wrexham pub where Paul Rudd was spotted ahead of the club's huge promotion clincher against Boreham Wood had to shut early on Saturday.

The Dragons secured promotion back to the Football League for the first time since 2008 after coming from a goal down to win 3-1, with talisman Paul Mullin bagging a second half brace.

Fans invaded the pitch in sensational scenes at the Racecourse ground, while owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney were overcome with emotion at the final whistle.

The Turf Pub, featured in the Disney+ 'Welcome to Wrexham' documentary and the place where the club were originally founded, was the place to be for the wild celebrations after Wrexham lifted the National League title.

Hollywood star Rudd was there pre-match, as was Marvel director Joe Russo. Reynolds and McElhenney are regulars and are known to sink a pint or two.

But it was absolutely rammed afterwards, to the point where landlord Wayne Jones had to close prematurely because of how busy the pub got.

"They've completely drank us dry,” he told BBC news.

“It was bonkers, we had probably 450 people outside, and god knows how many hundreds inside - we were up to capacity in both.”

"We've actually shut for the first time in 15 years that we've been here.

"I'm tired, exhausted actually. It's been a long nine months, but worth every second. Still a bit emotional, woke up with a few tears."

Wayne had informed the public beforehand that they would stop admitting people at 6pm for the game and apologised in advance to anyone who was not allowed in afterwards.

Over in a different pub, The Fat Boar, local superfan Bootlegger, real name Karl Phillips, celebrated the achievement with captain Ben Tozer.

The vlogger and skipper were filmed belting out "Allez, Allez, Allez" as well as "we hate Chester" as a large group of supporters joined in.
