New footage shows Matheus Nunes was ONSIDE against Liverpool, referee asked linesman to rule it out

Wolves' late winner was ruled out against Liverpool in an extremely controversial offside decision.

New footage released shows Matheus Nunes was clearly onside for Wolves' disallowed winner against Liverpool.

The FA Cup third round tie was 2-2 going into the latter stages at Anfield, with Goncalo Guedes and Hwang Hee-chan on target for Wolves and Darwin Nunez and Mo Salah finding the net for Liverpool.

Wolves thought they had won it in the 82nd minute when Toti Gomes flicked the ball past Alisson Becker from close range, sparking some wild scenes in the away end.

However, the goal was chalked off for offside and the decision stood despite a lengthy VAR check. Those watching were left utterly perplexed and unaware of who was said to be offside and at one point in the attack it happened.

It then came to to light that it was to do with the role Matheus Nunes played. The Portugal midfielder joined in the phase of play after taking the corner and put the dangerous cross into the box with his left foot.

Incredibly, the issue was that the camera angle required was not required and so could not determine whether Nunes was offside when the ball returned to him on the left.

ITV only had 17 camera angles available, it has been reported.

Thus, the on-field call remained. But new footage of the incident shows that referee Andy Madley clearly signalled to his linesman to put his flag up.

He did not do immediately, having started walking away to the halfway line for a brief moment as Wolves celebrated. However when the gesture from Madley arrived, the flag for offside went up 3.12 seconds after.

Much to Wolves' frustrations, we also see that Nunes was in fact being played onside by Trent Alexander-Arnold at the far post.

While VAR didn't have access to the relevant camera angles, Wolves boss Julen Lopetegui did on his tactical camera.

Speaking after the game, the Spaniard said: “The offside that we had – we have seen it, the offside doesn’t exist, I’m sorry. It’s impossible. Someone has told him [the referee] it’s offside, but we’ve seen the images, it doesn’t exist. The decision is wrong. I make mistakes every day, and sometimes they do too. It is a pity, because I’m sorry, it’s not offside.

"Our tactical camera – at the time I have seen the replay and it was [even] better in the dressing room."

Wolves and Liverpool will now have a replay on Tuesday 17 January at Molineux.
