Fans stunned at Wolves' asking price for Matheus Cunha as shock release clause revealed after Liverpool display

Cunha signed a new four-and-a-half year deal with Wolves in January - before netting his 12th league goal of the season versus Liverpool.

Fans have been left stunned at Wolves' reported asking price for Matheus Cunha after his performance against Liverpool.

Cunha scored a superb left-footed strike into the bottom corner during his side's 2-1 defeat at Anfield.

It is the Brazilian's 12th Premier League goal in just 24 appearances this season - the most prolific campaign of his career in any division.

Cunha was linked with a move to Champions League-chasing Nottingham Forest in the winter transfer window but decided to sign a new contract with Wolves.

He signed a new four-and-a-half year deal until the summer of 2029 - but it is claimed that it is accompanied by a release clause.

According to various reports, the value of the release clause is worth £62.5 million, meaning Wolves would have no choice but to accept such a bid if it came in as they could not demand a higher fee.

Arsenal, Manchester United and Tottenham are the other English clubs who have been linked with Cunha, though there is believed to be interest from within Europe as well.

The fee would represent a profit for Wolves on the £44 million they paid to sign the 25-year-old from Atletico Madrid in 2023, but fans may have expected the forward to command a much higher fee given his age and Premier League performances.

Taking to Twitter both before and after his goal against Liverpool, fans had their say on the clause.

One fan wrote: "Pay the £62.5m release clause for Cunha in the summer and don't look back."

Another said: "We [Manchester United] paid £43m for Zirkzee, 62 for Cunha is a steal in today's market."

A third added: "Wolves put a £62m clause on Cunha, which is about 62 million reasons why Arsenal should think twice."

A fourth said: "Cunha is the one for Liverpool, that release clause makes it such a doable deal this summer."

And a fifth stated: "Someone pay that clause."
