Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has been speaking about the World Cup and believes Lisandro Martinez is "perfect" for the big stage in Qatar.

Martinez signed for United in the summer from Ajax for nearly £57million and has become a fan-favourite since he arrived at Old Trafford.

The 24-year-old had an enormous amount of doubters before playing a single minute in the Premier League but has soon made them realise his ability.

United legend Rooney has noticed the impact he has had on Erik ten Hag's side and has praised the Argentinian.

Rooney: He is composed and aggressive

Speaking in his latest column for The Times, Rooney said: "I really like Lisandro Martínez. Watching him for Manchester United recently, he is really composed and aggressive. He is perfect for international football and will be a big player for them."

Rooney then discussed his thoughts on Argentina potentially winning the tournament and if that would mean Lionel Messi can be established as the GOAT.

"People said the same about Cristiano Ronaldo winning the Euros with Portugal in 2016. It would be a great story for football if either Messi or Ronaldo won the World Cup. I have heard some of the Argentine players saying that they want to win it for Messi. That’s crazy — and might only increase the pressure on them.

"Everyone has different views on Messi and Ronaldo but I have said many times that I think Messi is the best. I have watched lots of videos of Diego Maradona, who was a similar player, but Messi is better. He has everything — the way he controls games, his dribbling, his assists — whereas Ronaldo is more of a goalscorer."
