Virgil van Dijk has claimed that Ajax defender Jurrien Timber is better than he was at the same age.

21-year-old Timber has been impressing many around the continent after producing some commanding displays at the heart of the Ajax defence.

New Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag was keen on bringing Timber to Old Trafford but he was unable to tempt his former club into selling the highly rated Dutchman.

Timber is now looking secure a place in Louis van Gaal’s squad for the upcoming World Cup in Qatar.

Netherlands captain Van Dijk, who is regarded as one of the best defenders in world football has now heaped praise on the young Ajax star.

The Liverpool man said: “I wasn’t nearly as far along as he is now [at the same age].

“I have nothing but praise for him. He is a great player and a true professional.

“He has so much potential. Hopefully he can develop further. Then it will be all right, I think.”

Timber has a huge job in his hands if he is to force his way into the Netherlands starting eleven at the World Cup.

The likes of Matthijs de Ligt, Stefan de Vrij and Nathan Ake are all looking to win a place alongside Van Dijk in the starting XI.

Van Dijk has said that every player knows their role at the moment.

He said: “I think everyone knows their role at the moment.

“The national coach is very clear about this. Everyone feels the responsibility, whether you play or not.

“Of course, it is not easy to deal with that, because you always want to I think they are doing an excellent job and will always be there when we need them. Also in terms of input, towards the team. That is also necessary to be successful.”

The Netherlands are in Group A for the upcoming tournament. Alongside the hosts, Qatar, Ecuador and Senegal.

In the latest round of UEFA Nations League fixtures, Van Gaal’s side won 2-0 against Poland on Wednesday. They will next face Belgium on Sunday evening.
