In what is the tightest Premier League probably ever when it comes to relegation places it's very important for the 12 teams that are still reasonably in the battle to gain an advantage. Southampton will be hoping they can get one with a new signing.

The Premier League is often split into three mini tables of the 'top six,' the table of mid table obscurity and the relegation battle. This season is no different but the mid table 'battle' is only between two sides.

Right now the top six is battling between itself as usual, although Manchester City are runaway leaders, and then only Leicester City and Burnley look unlikely to be dragged into a relegation battle, whilst the rest of the 12 could easily go down.

Southampton are one of those teams well entrenched in that battle in fact they're literally in the relegation zone right now. Their biggest problem seems to be scoring goals having bagged just 24 this season.

Mauricio Pellegrino has tried to make sure that's no longer a problem and according to multiple reports Saints and Ligue 1 champions have agreed a fee for forward Guido Carrillo with the Premier League side set to pay £19.2 million.

Carrillo played for Argentine side Estudiantes before he moved to the South of France where he played under Pellegrino, a sign that the manager isn't currently under threat of losing his job despite many of the other relegation threatened sides losing their managers.

The 26 year old forward hasn't signed for Saints just yet but it's expected to be done shortly. He's scored four Ligue 1 goals so far this season but has started just twice for Monaco.

Spartak Moscow winger Quincy Promes is another target for Southampton as they look to spend the money generated from Virgil van Dijk's sale to stay in the Premier League.

Last season's EFL Cup runners up have been in a slump since that loss to Manchester United at Wembley and haven't won a game in the league since November.

Something needs to change if they are to stay up and they'll be hoping the signing of Carrillo helps them.
