Newcastle United are on the verge of becoming one of the richest clubs in world football and that means they're being linked with a lot of high-profile transfers.

Mike Ashley is finally ready to sell the club and a move from the Saudi Arabia based PCP Partners consortium, alongside Amanda Staveley, has reportedly been accepted by the Sports Direct owner.

There will be huge money available to the club if the Saudi owners do get the green light to take control and that has led to increased transfer speculation.

The latest name to be linked with a move to the north east is Philippe Coutinho, with Mundo Deportivo claiming the Magpies are among the teams eyeing a move for the Barcelona flop.

Fans of the club are quite excited by the prospect with some comparing it favourably to the beginning of Manchester City's project, when the United Arab Emirates-based owners signed Robinho as their first transfer.

Coutinho hasn't had a good time of things since his move to Barcelona in January 2018 and has been on loan at Bayern Munich this season. The Bundesliga side have an option to sign him in the summer.

It looks unlikely that the German champions will try and sign him permanently, however, so a move elsewhere is likely and the former Liverpool midfielder's representatives are desperate to get his name out.

The 27-year-old has also been linked with Spurs, Chelsea and Everton already and it wouldn't be a surprise to see other clubs show an interest.

Coutinho isn't the only high-profile player that Steve Bruce's team have been linked with, while the manager himself is also under pressure with Max Allegri or Mauricio Pochettino reportedly of interest to the potential new owners.

The Premier League side have rumoured to be eyeing moves for Kalidou Koulibaly, Edinson Cavani and Dries Mertens since talk of the takeover came about.

Until the club does change owner though, you can pretty much rule out any high-profile signings.
