AC Milan Appoint Gennaro Gattuso As Manager After Sacking Vincenzo Montella

The Milan side drew on the weekend and it wasn't enough to save Montella's job.

The problem with getting a boost of money and making lots of transfers is it suddenly brings lots of new expectation to a club. That is exactly why Vincenzo Montella has just been sacked as AC Milan manager.

AC Milan have been a sleeping giant of Italian and European football for far too long but this summer came the belief that they could once again fight for major honours with new owners, new money and a lot of good signings.

The problem is that things haven't gone well at all for Milan and after a 0-0 draw with Torino on the weekend they find themselves well off the pace, already 11 points off a Champions League place.

And that has seen Vincenzo Montella pay for the bad start with his job. The former Roma manager was sacked on Monday morning and immediately replaced by former Milan midfielder Gennaro Gattuso.

Gattuso is infamous for his time at the base of Milan's midfield, with Andrea Pirlo the good cop to the snarling bad of Gattuso, and has been managing Milan's youth team.

It's brutal on Montella who had a good season finishing sixth in his only full season in charge last term and even won the Supercoppa Italiana but his start to this campaign has obviously not been good enough, especially considering the money spent.

Let's hope we get to see more of these scenes on the touchline. Image: PA

The new man in charge at the San Siro has a mixed history as a manager. He lasted just over three months and six Serie A games at Palermo, left Crete due to financial problems and got Pisa promoted to Serie B.

Just how long he can last in his new position remains to be seen but we hope he brings some of the fireworks he brought to the pitch to the touchline.
