David De Gea was one of the finest goalkeepers to grace the Premier League in recent seasons, with there arguably being no better shot-stopper in the division.

The Spaniard joined the club in the summer of 2011, and initially he would struggle in English football, but he would overcome this as he would have a Manchester United career full of silverware.

De Gea would lift the Premier League in 2013 along with an FA Cup, a Europa League and two EFL Cups during his period at the Red Devils.

Yet, by the end of his career at United, fans appeared to be happy that he was set to depart the club due to the belief that, while he was a fantastic shot-stopper, modern football had moved on, and he was not good enough at playing the ball with his feet.

The Red Devils would replace him with Andre Onana and De Gea would move to Italy to play with Serie A side Fiorentina, in which he has spent the last two campaigns.

Now it is being reported that he may be set for a return to the Premier League with Newcastle United reportedly interested in bringing the Spaniard to the club, as per Alan Nixon on Patreon.

There is a feeling that the Magpies want to move on from Nick Pope, who has been a reliable option for several seasons; however, injuries have started to become an issue for the England international.

Aaron Ramsdale is also at the club on loan, yet it may be cheaper to bring De Gea to the north east of England.

The 35-year-old will not be a long-term solution for the Magpies but could be a stopgap until they find a keeper who may be viewed as their number one for the foreseeable future.

Fans of Newcastle would be interested to know that De Gea has been a key piece of Fiorentina since he joined the club; however, it has not been an enjoyable campaign for the Italian club this year as they are battling against relegation from Serie A.

His first season was a lot better as the club finished sixth in the division to qualify for the Europa Conference League.

De Gea will also not be a player they can sign for free, but there will be hopes he can be brought in for a relatively small fee as he signed a contract extension until 2028.
