The summer transfer window will soon open and it appears Manchester United and Arsenal could do battle over a Serie A striker with a £34m release clause.

The window officially opens on Friday, June 14, and will run until August 30 for clubs across Europe to do business with one another.

Both United and Arsenal are in the market for striking reinforcements after both sides' recently concluded campaigns highlighted a need for extra firepower.

The Gunners ended the Premier League season as runners-up and boasted the division's best defence, but did not have an out and out centre forward who could be relied upon, though the likes of Bukayo Saka, Kai Havertz and Leandro Trossard provided firepower.

United meanwhile are in clear need of striking reinforcements, as was the case last summer.

Rasmus Hojlund is the only recognised senior striker on United's books after his first campaign at Old Trafford, which was stop-start at times due to injury.

Anthony Martial will depart United on a free transfer this summer, and the club's poor form in front of goal was highlighted by ending the Premier League season with a negative goal difference.

Both clubs need to make acquisitions in that department, with the Gunners seeking to close the gap to Manchester City and United aiming to bounce back from an overall dreadful campaign, which albeit had a good ending with winning the FA Cup.

And according to Sky Sports, both Arsenal and United are monitoring Bologna striker Joshua Zirkzee.

The 23-year-old Dutchman scored 12 goals in all competitions for Bologna this season, as the club sealed qualification for the Champions League next season following a fifth placed finish in Serie A.

Sky in Italy report that AC Milan are strongly interested in Zirkzee's services, after talks took place last week in London and though nothing was agreed, the San Siro side remain in contact with the player's representatives.

The player has a release clause worth £34m in his Bologna contract, which still has two years remaining on it.

Juventus have also been linked with a move for the striker, though they would have to make sales to raise funds to buy him.

It will be interesting to see how this one pans out and if either United or Arsenal end up making a definitive move for the Netherlands under-21 international.
