David de Gea drops another hint over return to football amid rumours of shock Premier League move

The former Manchester United shot-stopper left the club last summer.

David De Gea has provided yet another cryptic clue on social media over the location of his next club, as rumours continue to swirl over whether he could make an early return to the Premier League.

The former Manchester United goalkeeper left Old Trafford after 12 years earlier this summer, with Andre Onana brought in to replace the Spaniard.

De Gea had won the Premier League's Golden Glove as United finished third under Erik ten Hag but, as of yet, the 33-year-old has yet to find another club.

Having made a whopping 545 appearances for United, it seemed as though the former Atletico Madrid man was set to initially extend his stay at Old Trafford.

But after the club withdrew the offer made to him previously, both De Gea and United opted to part ways back in July.

Ever since, the shot-stopper has been spotted in both the UK and Spain as he weighs up his next move, with a switch to Saudi Arabia quickly quashed.

Taking to Instagram over the past 24 hours, the Spain international posted the phrase 'work, work, work' along with his goalkeeping gloves and boots on the training pitch, again prompting some mystery as to where he will play next.

Newcastle United have been touted as the most likely club to sign him in January, given the recent injury sustained to number-one choice Nick Pope.

The former Burnley man suffered a nasty-looking blow during the Magpies' recent 1-0 win over Manchester United in the Premier League at St. James' Park.

Former United loanee Martin Dubravka has been drafted in to fill the void at present but he too has suffered from fitness issues in recent days and Loris Karius is next in line.

It remains to be seen whether De Gea would be an option Eddie Howe's side would look to explore in the New Year, given Pope is not expected to return for four months in total.

The Spaniard's wages at Old Trafford were rumoured to be in the region of £350,000 a week and with Newcastle's recent Saudi investment, it seems logical that Eddie Howe's side could explore a deal to help bring De Gea to the club next month.

Experienced goalkeeper Mark Gillespie is also still at the club but hasn't played for the Magpies in over two-and-a-half-years.
