Ex-Man United star ‘rejects’ move to Inter Miami despite call from Lionel Messi

Ex-Man United star ‘rejects’ move to Inter Miami despite call from Lionel Messi

Lionel Messi has failed to persuade a former Manchester United player to join him at Inter Miami

A former Manchester United star has reportedly rejected a move to Inter Miami despite a call from Lionel Messi.

Back in the summer, eight-time Ballon d’Or winner Messi ended his time in European football as he left Paris Saint Germain for MLS side Inter Miami, who are partly owned by former England captain David Beckham.

Since Messi arrived at the club, he has been joined by a trio of his former Barcelona teammates in Sergio Busquets, Jordi Alba and Luis Saurez.

Last week, it was reported that Messi and Inter Miami boss Tata Martino have both reached out to former United defender Marcos Rojo over the phone.

It has been claimed that Messi phoned Rojo in a bid to persuade him to join Inter Miami.

However, it has been reported that the defender has made his decision on his future.

According to Spanish news outlet Marca, Rojo has informed his current team, Boca Juniors, that he wants to stay at the club until the end of his contract, which is due to expire in 2025.

The report also stated that apart from Inter Miami, the central defender also rejected interest from Brazilian club Palmeiras.

It is believed that Rojo has been assured by Boca Juniors bosses that they will piece together a team that is capable of being competitive this season.

During his seven-year stay at United, Rojo got his hands on the FA Cup, EFL Cup, FA Community Shield and the UEFA Europa League.

After returning to Argentina to play for Boca Juniors in 2021, the 33-year-old has won three trophies including the Primera Division and the Argentine Super Cup.

On the international stage, Rojo has played 61 times for his country, scoring on three occasions. Rojo was part of the squad when Argentina came second in the 2014 World Cup and the Copa America in 2015 and 2016.
