Arsenal terminate player's contract 'with immediate effect' as forgotten player axed

Arsenal are set to terminate a player’s contract.

Arsenal have terminated a player’s contract ahead of the January transfer deadline.

The latest transfer period is set to slam shut on Thursday night, with Arsenal set for a busy end.

During the summer window, the Gunners brought in the likes of Kai Havertz, Declan Rice, Jurrien Timber and David Raya.

As a result, the winter window has been a quiet one for Mikel Arteta.

However, they have confirmed one departure before Thursday night’s deadline.

According to transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano, goalkeeper Alex Runarsson will leave the club with immediate effect.

Romano wrote: “Arsenal are set to terminate Runar Alex Runarsson contract with immediate effect, also breaking Cardiff City loan.

“He’s set to join Copenhagen, as called today by @danielnojsen — deal almost agreed.”

Back in September 2020, Runarsson joined Arsenal from French side Dijon.

The Icelandic made his Premier League debut in February 2021 when Bernd Leno was shown a red card against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The Gunners ended up losing that match by two goals to one.

Runarsson has since been sent out on loan to the likes of OH Leuven, Alanyaspor and most recently Cardiff City.

Confirming Runarsson’s departure, a statement from the club read: “Alex Runarsson has returned from his loan spell at Cardiff City and will now leave the club by mutual agreement.

“Iceland international Alex joined us in September 2020 from French side Dijon FCO and made six appearances in his debut season for us, keeping three clean sheets in the process.

“The 28-year-old goalkeeper has spent valuable time on-loan in recent seasons with OH Leuven in Belgium, Turkish side Alanyaspor, as well as Cardiff City where he has spent the first half of this campaign. Everyone at Arsenal thanks Alex for his contribution during his time with us and we wish him well for the future.”
