Manchester United fans want to see Scott McTominay up front instead of Cristiano Ronaldo after seeing footage of him playing in the position at academy level.

Although he often plays as a centre-back for Scotland, McTominay traditionally plays as a sitting midfielder for the Red Devils.

On Thursday night McTominay bagged the final goal to wrap up a 4-2 Carabao Cup third round win over Aston Villa, latching onto a glorious Alejandro Garnacho pass.

While the pass was stunning, it was a well-timed run into the box and fine stabbed finish from McTominay.

The way in which they goal was scored looked like something you'd see from an out and out number nine and after the strike, United supporters have uncovered footage of McTominay playing as a forward for the youth team.

Playing against Paris Saint-Germain in the International Champions Cup, McTominay displayed some lovely footwork to turn a defender and then finished like prime Thierry Henry.

Another clip saw him bag two smartly-taken goals while wearing the No.9 shirt for United's reserves at Old Trafford, while he also thumped one in from distance away at Southampton.

And fans think McTominay needs to be reverted to his previous role to get the best out of his skillset.

McTominay was thrown up front late on as United salvaged a late draw against Chelsea, while more recently we've seen Harry Maguire partner Cristiano Ronaldo in attack against Real Sociedad.

These days McTominay stands at a 6ft 4 but incredibly he underwent an insane 10-inch growth spurt after his 18th birthday.

He was also a striker as a youngster, as confirmed by United's legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

“Good character, great trainer, I know a little bit about the boy,” Ferguson said on McTominay.

"I signed him when he was seven or eight [years old]. He was actually a center-forward as a kid. He has sprouted, a little bit like Darren [Fletcher] when he first came.”
