Cristiano Ronaldo apologised to Al Nassr supporters after he scored an 118th-minute penalty in their clash against UAE Pro League side Al Ain.

Luis Castro's side were eliminated from this season's Asian Champions League after suffering a penalty shoot-out defeat.

Having won 4-3 on the night following a 1-0 defeat in the first leg, Al Nassr were favourites to secure their place in the semi-finals.

But in the end, Marcelo Brozovic, Otavio and Alex Telles failed to find the net from 12 yards as Al Ain pounced.

In fact, Cristiano Ronaldo was the only player to score his penalty as the Saudi Pro League side bowed out following an agonising defeat.

It was a night to forget for Al Nassr and Ronaldo, who missed one of the biggest sitters of his career in the second-half of Monday's game.

The 39-year-old, who has been instrumental in their AFC Champions League campaign, scoring five times, failed to find the net from three yards.

He would, however, send the game to penalties with two minutes remaining of normal time.

And moments later, he appeared to make an apology gesture towards the thousands of Al Nassr fans inside the Al-Awwal Stadium following his second-half miss.

Twitter user @Ali_alabdallh, who attended the game on Monday night, posted footage of the moment alongside the caption: "The legend Ronaldo apologises to the fans after the goal due to the missed opportunities."

Al Nassr and Ronaldo will be hoping to close the 12-point gap at the top of the Saudi Pro League on Friday, when they face Al Ahli.
