Man City fans name Romelu Lukaku as club's 'greatest legend' after huge second half miss

Man City fans name Romelu Lukaku as club's 'greatest legend' after huge second half miss

Man City fans have reacted.

Manchester City fans have joked that Romelu Lukaku is a club legend after he missed a major opportunity for Inter Milan during the Champions League final.

The Belgian forward entered the field as a second half substitute, replacing the injured Edin Dzeko.

Eleven minutes later, the Italian side went 1-0 down through Rodri's 20-yard strike, with the Spaniard curling the ball into the bottom corner with precision.

But Inter would still fight back, with several major chances. Federico Dimarco hit the bar for Inter, but Lukaku inadvertently blocked a rebounded header.

But the major moment came with just minutes remaining. Fellow substitute Robin Gosens headed the ball across the box for Inter, with Lukaku in position to get on the end of it.

His header from close range, however, was straight at Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson, who instinctively threw out a knee to prevent the Belgian from equalising.

Lukaku had one much tougher chance, firing his low effort through the legs of a defender but once again at the Brazilian goalkeeper.

The forward couldn't get Inter back on level terms as City lifted the Champions League crown - and City fans recognised the significance of his miss in their triumph.

Man City fans brand Lukaku 'legend'

Taking to Twitter, one City fan simply wrote: "Romelu Lukaku is a Man City legend."

Another added: "Lukaku is a Man City legend despite never even playing for them."

A third said: "Treble completed. Lukaku has gone down in history as Manchester City's greatest legend."

A fourth fan, meanwhile, recognised the contribution of City's goalkeeper: "Lukaku and Ederson Man City legends."

And another stated: "Lukaku is forever a City legend."

Pep Guardiola's side secured the 1-0 victory to win their first Champions League title - and the Spaniard's first European crown since winning the 2011 final with Barcelona against Manchester United.

Lukaku's future, meanwhile, remains unclear. He appears likely to return to Chelsea following the fixture, but it is unknown whether he will play for the Blues next season.
