Neymar Reveals Why He Didn't Let Edinson Cavani Take Penalty Vs Dijon

The Brazilian cut the mustard with four goals but wouldn't let his teammate break the club's all time top goalscorer record.

The chance to become the top goalscorer of a club doesn't come round all too often which is why fans weren't too pleased with Neymar when he took that chance away from Edinson Cavani. Now the Brazilian has spoken about it.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic was PSG's all time top goalscorer up until last weekend. Then Edinson Cavani came along and his goal on Saturday against Montpellier being his 157th for the French club.

The Uruguayan though could have broken the record a week and a half earlier. The former Napoli man had equalled Zlatan's tally with a goal in the 21st minute.

Then Neymar ran riot scoring a hat-trick before a late penalty gave Cavani the chance to make history, only for the former Barca man to score his fourth and make it 8-0.

The two clashed over penalty taking earlier in the season and the world's most expensive player told his national press why he took the penalty, saying:

"It was impossible not to know [about the record]. The coach chose me as the penalty taker though, and there is no problem with this.

"Everyone [in the team] knows what went on in the changing room, the coach decided and I take on that responsibility.

"I am calm and happy here with my friends and teammates. I came here to make history, give my best and score a lot of goals."

Neymar booed during 8-0 win

Imagine the scene. You're about to score your fourth goal of the game from the penalty spot. Your team is already winning 7-0 and you convert from 12 yards to make it 8-0.

The crowd then proceed to boo you, but there's a reason why Neymar received a negative response from the Paris Saint-Germain crowd last night and once again, it relates to teammate and fellow striker Edinson Cavani.

During the club's comprehensive win over Dijon, the world's most expensive player was whistled by his own fans after he didn't allow Cavani to take the penalty that would have made him PSG's all-time top scorer.

Neymar may have produced one of his best performances at the Parc des Princes since his move from Barcelona, but the Brazilian was said to be upset after fans reacted badly to his penalty decision.

That being said, teammate Thiago Silva spoke about the incident after the final whistle and confirmed that Neymar was 'not angry':

"No, I do not think he was angry when he left," Silva told Canal+.

"There was some of the supporters against him, but the most important thing is the final score and the win. And for Edi, the record will come.

Lionel Messi's tribute to Neymar after he left for PSG was incredible...

Silva continued, saying: "He scores all the time, there are still a lot of games to play this year, he will beat all records."

Plenty went against Silva's words and claimed he was upset by the boos.

Here's how Twitter reacted to the incident:

Thoughts on the incident? Should Neymar have given the penalty to Cavani, who was about to become the PSG's all time top scorer?
