Richarlison couldn't hold back tears after scoring first Champions League goals

Richarlison couldn't hold back tears after scoring first Champions League goals

The Tottenham Hotspur forward scored his first two goals for the club as they beat Marseille in their opening Champions League group game.

Richarlison made sure he had a Champions League debut to remember with two late goals against Marseille, and he couldn't hold back the tears as he celebrated.

Richarlison moved from Everton to Spurs in the summer, swapping last season's relegation battle, that he helped win, for a first campaign in Europe's elite competition.

The Brazilian thought he'd opened his goalscoring account for his new team at the weekend, celebrating by taking off his shirt, only for it to be ruled out by VAR.

However, on Wednesday night he did manage to grab his first goal, and his second, as Antonio Conte's started their campaign in the Champions League.

The 25-year-old got on the end of Ivan Perisic's cross to head home his first, in the 76th minute, before heading home again five minutes later, this time from Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg's ball.

It stayed 2-0 and after the final whistle the club's latest hero went over to celebrate with his friends and family and was clearly very emotional.

It was looking like it might have been a tough return to the competition for the north London team, who hadn't played in the Champions League for the previous two seasons.

Marseille had a majority of the possession in the first half and the French team, boosting a number of former Arsenal players, had opportunities to score as well.

However, the game changed just minutes after the half time break, as they went down to 10 men with former Newcastle United player Chancel Mbemba was sent off.

The defender was the last man as Son Heung-min sprang free and looked to be racing into the box, before Mbemba brought him down as last man.

It still looked like the Ligue 1 side would manage to secure a huge away draw, before Richarlison had his say on the game.

Spurs, who have had an unbeaten start to the season, will next face Sporting in the Champions League, before facing Eintracht Frankfurt back-to-back.

Fans of the club will be looking forward to Thursday night when they can revel in rivals Arsenal playing in the Europa League, especially after mocking them for Aaron Ramsdale's appearance in an advert for the competition.
