Casemiro had a priceless response when he was asked why he forfeited Champions League football to sign for Manchester United.

The Brazilian midfielder has penned a four-year contract with United, who have splashed out £70 million and made him one of their top-earners on wages in the region of £350,000-a-week.

The serial winner's decision to join United has surprised many given their current position and the fact they are playing Europa League football this season.

After all, the 30-year-old has just come off the back of winning a fifth Champions League with Real Madrid, who were paired with Celtic, RB Leipzig and Shakhtar Donetsk in Group F in this season's Group Stage draw.

On Friday, United will discover their fate in the secondary competition after finishing sixth in the Premier League last term.

And it seems as though Casemiro is not too downhearted about not hearing the Champions League theme - in fact he seems a little bored after lifting it a ridiculous five times.

Asked about not playing in the Champions League this season, Casemiro told ESPN Brasil: "Well.. I already have five, don’t I?"

The former Porto man had a big grin and then couldn't help but laugh after mentioning how many Champions League winners medals he has.

He did then elaborate on just why he made the call to give up Champions League football.

Casemiro has become United's fifth signing of the summer and was presented on the pitch at Old Trafford prior to the 2-1 win over Liverpool on Monday.

His shirt number has not yet been revealed but there has been plenty of talk indicating Casemiro will take the vacant No.18 shirt associated with legendary midfielder Paul Scholes.

In his first interview with the club's website, Casemiro apologised to the fans for not speaking English and vowed to learn the language.

"Yes, my wife speaks English. I have a seven-year-old daughter and a one-year-old son. So they speak a bit better English than me," he said.

"I'm truly sorry to you and all of the United fans that I don't speak English, but I want to study.

"I want to learn as soon as possible so that I can learn about English culture, to learn English and speak to my friends, my team-mates, all the club staff and I want to show them I'm one of them.”

Casemiro also detailed his drive and mentality to be the best and hailed compatriot Fred as "a great player".
