There's one sure fire way of going from being a bit of a hero at your former club to being hated and that's by joining their rivals. Michael Owen did exactly that in his career and he's hit back at the fans who constantly remind him of it.
Michael Owen was a boy wonder at Liverpool but he was eventually thought to be surplus to requirements and when Real Madrid came for him he decided to move to the Bernabeu.

That move never angered fans of the Reds and nor did his move to Newcastle United. If his next move had been to Stoke City that would have been fine too but in he moved to Old Trafford to play for Manchester United and turned Liverpool fans completely against him.
Yesterday Owen was on the end of some historic hate, despite now working for Liverpool as an ambassador, because of a video circulating of him thanking Karim Benzema for his move to Real when the Frenchman was United's number one target:
The former England striker only played for two seasons for the Red Devils and helped win the Premier League and League Cup during his time there but it was enough for Liverpool fans to turn against him.

Now an ambassador for the club he made his name at Owen took to Twitter to explain that he always wanted a return to Anfield but they never wanted him:
Some fans have even taken to Reddit to try and start a petition to get Owen removed from his position at the club:
