Gary Lineker Goes After Karim Benzema After His Two-Goal Performance Against APOEL
Gary Lineker was Tweeting about Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema last night.
The former England striker has developed something of a reputation as trolling the Frenchman and did so in Real's 3-1 defeat to Spurs earlier this month.
Harry Kane scores again. Thankfully Zidane thinks Benzema is the best so they won't be interested in poaching him.- Gary Lineker (@GaryLineker) October 22, 2017
Is it me or is Benzema a tad overrated? A goal every other game in a team as strong as Real Madrid is nada especial. Decent not great.- Gary Lineker (@GaryLineker) October 17, 2017
Double Alli makes it 2-0. Surely Zidane will bring on Benzema now.- Gary Lineker (@GaryLineker) November 1, 2017
And even with Benzema being back amongst the goals last night, notching a brace in a 6-0 win over APOEL Nicosia of Cyprus, the Match of the Day and BT Sport presenter was at it again.
The Tweet is open for interpretation, with a lot of people thinking Lineker was being serious with his post. But clearly, the ex-Spurs, Leicester and Everton striker was being sarcastic:
2 goals for Benzema. He's back.- Gary Lineker (@GaryLineker) November 21, 2017
Where are your name in the list of top scorers of Champions League/European Cup???- Inquisitore666 (@Inquisitore666) November 21, 2017
what did you win? Not a league, not a champions, just friends. benzema has won 3 champions, respect...do you know the mean?- SERGIO GARCIA (@s_gcia_iglesias) November 22, 2017
A 'thinly-veiled dig' is probably the best way to describe the above Tweet from Gary - and you wonder whether it will irk Benzema like the one about him being "overrated" one did.
Speaking during an interview with Les Inrockuptibles, via MARCA, he said:
"The criticism from ex-footballers who become journalists, some of who only share their hate, I feel sorry for them, frankly.
"They have experienced the same situations but don't have solidarity."
Benzema's goals last night were his first in the Champions League since February, and saw him become just the sixth player to have scored 40 UCL goals for one club.
