The England manager's job is often referred to as the poisoned chalice, you simply can't win no matter what you do. Considering that you probably shouldn't make it more difficult for yourself, like Gareth Southgate.
No matter what you do as England manager it simply won't be enough to please the fans, who somehow manager to make themselves believe they're going to win every tournament just as it starts, or the blood thirsty media ready to have you sacked at the drop of a hat.
All England managers manage to help themselves with their inevitable demise, Sam Allardyce with his pint of wine, Roy Hodgson by losing to Iceland, Fabio Capello backing John Terry, Steve McClaren with his umbrella and so on.

After the aberration of Allardyce's one match tenure we now have Southgate and so far the former Middlesbrough centre-back hasn't done much wrong, but it doesn't take too long for that to change.
Ahead of the World Cup qualifier against Malta tonight the manager confirmed that Joe Hart will be continuing in goal saying, "Joe will start for us [against Malta] I think he's our best goalkeeper at the moment."

Hart hasn't kept a clean sheet for 32 games and his form for West Ham, Torino, Manchester City and England for the past couple of years have been questionable at best.
With Jack Butland and Tom Heaton in the squad, Jordan Pickford injured and Fraser Forster not even in the squad the Three Lions have plenty of options all in better form for Hart and fans aren't too impressed with their manager:
Hart isn't anywhere near being England's best goalkeeper right now and if he was in any other position he'd be dropped but managers clearly think dropping a 'keeper' makes too big of a headline.

How can England expect to be anything other than average if they continue to do stuff like this!
Surely even Hart can keep a clean sheet against Malta though...
