Prison Benjamin Mendy Is Being Kept At Averages 29 Attacks Per Month And Has 'Tangled Web Of Gangs'

The prison where Benjamin Mendy is being kept at averages 29 assaults per month, it has been revealed.

On Tuesday, the CPS (the Crown Prosecution Service) confirmed a further two counts of rape were issued against Mendy, bringing the total to six - plus one sexual assault - in charges from Cheshire Police.

The France international will stay at the Category B jail until his trial and The Sun have shared brutal details surrounding inmates' behaviour.

Between July 2020 and June 2021, it's said there were 338 assaults in this year - 29 a month on average and nearly one attack per day.

35 of those incidents involved weapons - with one prisoner melting a razor blade into a toothbrush and receiving an extra 10 months on his sentence as a result.

There were also 53 police referrals for prosecution following on from incidents. This is despite prisoners largely being locked up in their cells due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

"The prison’s local and urban catchment area has led to more conflict which takes place in the community moving inside the walls," a report from the Independent Monitoring Board said.

"To this end one officer spends considerable time trying to unpick the tangled web of Liverpool gangs.

"During the reporting period the average prison population was 1113 with the number of assaults averaging 29 per month which represents slightly over 2 per cent."

According to The Sun, Mendy was told he would be placed on the VP wing but he misheard and assumed that he would be placed in a VIP wing for celebrities.

Instead, he was grouped with vulnerable prisoners and is believed to have had a "rude awakening".

Mendy was suspended by City in August. The 27-year-old joined in a £52 million move in 2017 and has played 75 times.
