Jurgen Klopp shares 'polite request' as he urges Liverpool supporters to stop singing famous chant

The German manager has begged fans again to hold off on singing a song until the final whistle had been blown.

Jurgen Klopp has made his stance on a fan-favourite chant clear as he urged Liverpool supporters to direct their energy to the field of play instead.

Late last month, the German was criticised for ‘angrily’ asking fans to stop singing a chant, titled ‘I’m so Glad (That Jurgen is a Red)’.

Sung to the tune of The Beatles’ 1964 track ‘I Feel Fine’, lyrics read: “I’m so glad that Jurgen is a Red. I’m so glad he delivered what he said.

“Jurgen said to me, you know. We’ll win the Premier League, you know. He said so. I’m in love with him and I feel fine.”

However last month it seemed as if the father-of-two had finally had enough and reacted with an X-rated outburst.

In a clip posted to social media, Klopp could be heard pleading with Anfield to ‘stop singing that s***’ during Liverpool’s 3-1 win over Bournemouth.

The negative reaction came after the head honcho previously asked fans to stop singing the song during the match and instead wait until the final whistle had been blown.

Now, ahead of The Reds’ home game against Aston Villa on Sunday (3 September) Klopp has doubled down on his statement and also expressed his gratitude.

Referring to the chant in his programme notes, Klopp stated:“ I need to revisit a subject that I have raised before: my song. The first thing I have to say about it is I absolutely love it.

“To have a song sung in my name by the supporters of this club is something so special that I cannot put my feelings into words, but it is an honour that would have been beyond my imagination when I became Liverpool manager.”

However, the 56-year-old went on to say that while he doesn’t want any ‘misunderstanding’ and that he is ‘humbled’ by the chant, he no longer wants the song to be sung until the game has ended.

Klopp wrote: “Just thinking about it gives me goosebumps. The only exception I make – and it is much easier and much better to do it in these notes than it is in the heat of a game – is that I would love it if it became a song for after matches are finished.

“During games I want all of the support to go to the players. I want them to feel your backing and I want you to urge them on and keep them on their toes.”

He ended the statement by saying that he appreciated the support that Liverpool fans have lent to him and hopes that the ‘group of players could be given the same treatment’.

“I know it is not for me to tell you when you should sing which song, so this is just a polite request.”

Liverpool are due to host Villa at Anfield on Sunday off the back of their thrilling 2-1 win over Newcastle United last weekend.

A strong start to the season, the team currently sit fifth in the Premier League table with two wins and a 1-1 draw against Chelsea.
