Hull City make one of summer's most ambitious moves as unexpected £30m bid 'submitted'

With deadline day fast approaching, newly-promoted Hull City are working hard to secure what would be one of the biggest signings of the transfer window.

It has been a busy summer for the Tigers as they continue to add strength in depth. In fact, they have spent more than £75 million since beating Middlesbrough in the Championship play-off final.

From forking out a club-record fee - believed to be more than £20 million - for defender Nobel Mendy, to the additions of goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis and highly-rated youngster Lucas Harrington, Hull's business has caught the eye.

Earlier this week, they completed the signing of French forward Mohamed-Ali Cho, who has joined from Ligue 1 side Nice for around £15 million.

And if reports are to be believed, the Yorkshire-based side have submitted a €35 million (£30m) verbal bid to sign Malick Fofana from Lyon.

French publication Foot Mercato claim Hull have engaged in conversations with the 21-year-old over a video call, during which they outlined the club's project. They are now awaiting his response.

Fofana, who has scored two goals in his last two games for Lyon, is also said to be attracting interest from Inter Milan and Roma.

Earlier this week, journalist Romain Molina claimed the Ligue 1 side will need to raise around €100 million (£85m) from player sales before the start of next summer to balance the books.

The situation was only worsened on Wednesday, when they failed to qualify for the Champions League league phase after being beaten by Fenerbahce over two legs.

Malick Fofana turned down move to Liverpool last summer

Following the departure of Luis Diaz, Liverpool were heavily linked with a move for Fofana, who was widely regarded as one of the most exciting young wingers in world football at the time.

Fofana would later reveal that he turned the Premier League side down to prioritise regular game time.

"There was interest from those two clubs (Liverpool and Chelsea), but ultimately it wasn’t concrete enough", Fofana told Belgian publication HBVL.

"I’ve thought about a transfer, but I think it’s more important now that I play a lot, and that has to happen at Lyon because I still have progress to make. I realise I still have a lot to prove. I’ve already made progress. I’m now more decisive and more involved in the game."
