Man Utd receive apology from the Premier League after recent announcement

The Premier League has apologised to Manchester United for scheduling their game against Crystal Palace in the middle of a busy period.

Erik ten Hag's side are still in four competitions this season after advancing to the FA Cup fourth round with a 3-1 win over Everton on Friday.

United face League One outfit Charlton Athletic in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals on Tuesday, while they've got a Europa League tie with Barcelona set for later this month.

The Red Devils are fourth in the Premier League as they look to seal Champions League football for next season.

Ten Hag's promising start to life in the Old Trafford dugout means the next month or so will be jam-packed with games.

They've had another game added to that fixture list, with an away trip to Crystal Palace pencilled in for January 18. The game was originally set for September but had to be postponed due to the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

It means United will now play four games in 12 days. Tuesday's game with Charlton is followed by a clash with bitter rivals Manchester City on Saturday.

They'll then travel to Selhurst Park the following Wednesday before returning to London to face top of the table Arsenal on January 22.

An official Premier League statement reads: "The Palace v Man Utd match will take place on Wednesday, January 18, 8pm kick-off.

"The Premier League apologises for the late notice in confirming this fixture and understands supporters’ frustrations.

"While the League endeavours to give greater notice for rescheduling, the unique circumstances around these fixtures mean we were unable to."

It remains to be seen if United will add to their squad in the January transfer window.

Cristiano Ronaldo departed the club in November, leaving Anthony Martial as the only senior centre forward.

United have been linked with a loan move for Netherlands international Wout Weghorst in recent days.

Weghorst is currently on loan at Turkish outfit Besiktas from Burnley but is keen on a return to England.

Besiktas would likely want compensation for terminating Weghorst's season-long loan. The 30-year-old has scored eight league goals in 16 appearances this season, with his latest appearing to be a 'goodbye' to supporters.
