A contestant on Pointless stunned the entire panel with their answer to a World Cup question.

The BBC show gets contestants to give the most obscure answers possible to compete for the show's cash jackpot.

In an episode filmed in February, one contestant gave a bizarre answer to the dismay of viewers.

Host Alexander Armstrong asked: "National teams that have appeared at multiple FIFA men's World Cups?"

Of course, acceptable answers would have included Brazil, who have appeared at 22 World Cups, Germany and England, who have appeared at 20 and 19 World Cups respectively (excluding the 2026 World Cup, which the Three Lions have qualified for).

However, Lyn, who thought about his answer, went for a left-field choice that confused people watching.

He guessed Charlton Athletic - yes, the football club.

Needless to say, Charlton was incorrect as was indicated on the show.

"I'm afraid not a national side," said Armstrong, who delivered the bad news to Lyn.

Needless to say, Lyn's guess of Charlton to a World Cup question sent social media into overdrive as fans of The Addicks weighed in.

One X user joked: "Legend haha, that has to be one of the worst guesses ever."

A Charlton fan said: "We won the World Cup... I know you won’t believe us... the reds are goin’ uuuuup!"

Another added: "Not many people know we’ve been to the World Cup..."

A fourth commented: "Ahhhh yeah those good old days of cheering my team on in the World Cup."

A fifth wrote: "Chap on Pointless answers Charlton Athletic for countries that have appeared in the FIFA World Cup haha."

Despite Lyn's answer, Charlton have never appeared at the World Cup.

But unlike Brazil, Germany and England, the Championship team have won the FA Cup when they beat Burnley 1-0 at Wembley in the 1946/47 season.
