Piers Morgan Demands Arsenal Manager Mikel Arteta Is Sacked

"Arteta should be fired. Instead he’s been given a new deal and massive pay rise. For abject failure. Utterly ridiculous."

Piers Morgan thinks Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta should be fired for "abject failure" following their latest defeat.

The Gunners, who have lost more Premier League games than Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool combined this season, dropped crucial points in the race for Champions League football with a disappointing performance against in-form Newcastle.

Ben White opened the scoring with an own goal on Monday night before January signing Bruno Guimaraes doubled United's lead to give North London rivals Tottenham a two-point advantage going into the final day of the season.

It was a poor showing from Arsenal that brought plenty of criticism from Gunners fans, including a furious Piers Morgan.

After telling the team to "show some bloody fight" during the 2-0 defeat at St James' Park, TV personality and journalist Morgan proceeded to rip into Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta.

"Absolutely pathetic," he wrote on Twitter. "Why the hell did we give Arteta a contract before the season even finished?

"This will be his 12th League loss of the season, after spending £250m in 2 years," he added. "That would normally get an Arsenal manager the sack not a bloody new deal."

Sir Alan Sugar, who is often embroiled in arguments with Morgan on social media, then piped up about the Arsenal manager, saying: "Piersy it's about time you need to start slagging off Arteta like Wenger out."

Morgan responded: "I’ve been calling him out all season. He’s not good enough to be Arsenal manager, we should have gone for Conte when we had the chance."

It didn't stop there. The TV presenter then called on Arsenal to sack the Spaniard for "abject failure" following their latest defeat before slamming the decision to allow Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to leave for Barcelona.

"Arteta should be fired," he said. "Instead he’s been given a new deal and massive pay rise. For abject failure. Utterly ridiculous."

He added in another post: "We should have kept Aubameyang, got rid of Arteta and hired an experienced manager who can manage world class talent and whose process we can actually trust."

After the final whistle, former Arsenal captain Granit Xhaka produced a quite remarkable post-match interview following the loss.

"It's difficult to find the right words. From the first minute to the 90th we didn't deserve to be on the pitch," he said.

"I can't explain to you why. We didn't do what the game plan was, not listening to the coach. What happened was a disaster performance. You don't deserve to play Champions League or even Europa League.

"It's very hard to take it at the moment. I don't know why we're not doing what the coach is asking for us."
