Patrik Berger Is Responsible For The Most Underrated Goal In Premier League History, We're Still In Awe

Patrik Berger's volley that he set up himself for Portsmouth vs Charlton Athletic is still the most underrated goal in Premier League history.

If you grew up in the late 90s to early 2000s, you'll remember Czech Republic international Berger strutting his stuff at Anfield for Liverpool.

The winger was very popular on Merseyside and knew how to get the crowd on their feet - but it wasn't until his time at Portsmouth he became a Premier League cult hero.

Cast your minds back to August 2004. Berger was just coming back from a knee injury that had sidelined him since February. Then he produced this moment of beauty to remind everyone what he was all about.

David Unsworth played a short free-kick to the feet of Berger, who was battling former Liverpool teammate Danny Murphy in midfield.

What followed were two touches of sheer brilliance. Berger flicked the ball high in the air away from Murphy with his right foot, before swivelling and smashing a speculative effort towards Dean Kiely with his left.

The ball dipped into the top corner to stun The Valley's home support and send the away end into a frenzy. Berger was the coolest man in the ground however, letting out a wry smile as he extended his arms.

Kiely got back to his feet and couldn't have a moan at his defenders. Nobody on the planet was stopping that.

It wasn't enough to get Pompey anything from the game though.

Berger's scorcher was an equaliser after Jason Euell had put the Addicks ahead and four minutes from time, Unsworth went from hero to villain after turning into his own net.

Charlton earned all three points, but Berger stole the headlines with ease.

Fans online are watching the goal for the first time ever and they concede it's one of the best 'forgotten' goals around.

One commented: "It’s true, if that were Thierry Henry or Wayne Rooney it would be talked about forever."

Another put: "The players who play now don’t even try stuff like this."

A third said: "Can't beat this, vintage Barclays. Never see anything like it again."

While someone summed it up with: "Never seen this goal before but happy to say it’s the best scored in the history of the Premier League."

Berger would have spells with Aston Villa and Stoke City before leaving English football altogether for Sparta Prague in 2008. He'd then retire in 2010.

A true 'Streets Will Never Forget' player? We'll leave to that up to you.
