Hayet Abidal, the wife of former Barcelona defender Eric Abidal, has announced in a press release that she intends to file for divorce - following his affair with footballer Kheira Hamraoui.

It's a story that has dominated French news feeds for weeks, after Hamraoui, who plays for PSG's womens team, was attacked by thugs on the 4th of November.

AFP reports (via GFFN) that, as part of the investigation into the attack earlier this month, police inspected her phone records, and inadvertently discovered a close relationship with Abidal.

The Frenchman played for Barcelona between 2007 and 2013, becoming a key member of Pep Guardiola's all-conquering side that won two Champions League titles.

Abidal was diagnosed with a tumour of the liver in 2011, although he would make a remarkable recovery to end up playing the full 90 minutes as the Catalan giants defeated Manchester United in that year's Champions League final.

He returned to Barcelona in 2018 to become the club's director of football - which is when the affair with Hamraoui is alleged to have begun.

Before joining PSG in July, the French international played for Barcelona Femeni, reportedly growing close to Abidal during her time at the club.

With the cat now out of the bag, Hayet Abidal announced news of the affair on Friday, where her intentions were outlined in front of the world's press.

Hayet claims that Eric admitted to an adulterous relationship with Hamraoui, and that she will now demand a divorce in Barcelona.

As for the criminal investigation, it now appears as if both Abidals will be questioned by police regarding their possible involvement in the November 4th incident.

It was a Uniquely savage attack, one that saw Hamraoui get "punched, kicked, and hit with an iron bar", as per The Sun.

Reports indicate that a phone call took place between Eric and the 31-year-old midfielder on the morning of the attack, which looks to have altered the authorities.

For the time being, the investigation rumbles on, while no charges have been levelled against either Eric or Hayet.
