West Ham are in talks to sign Celta Vigo striker Maxi Gomez, who has a £43.3 million release clause in his contract.

The Hammers, who are still keen on recruiting a new forward irrespective of whether Marko Arnautovic gets his desired move to China, will have to eclipse their club-record £36 million capture of Felipe Anderson in the summer if they wish to sign the Uruguayan.

They have already had one bid rejected by Celta, but are considering paying the full premium clause to secure his services.

Gomez, 22, has been in fine form in La Liga this season - scoring nine goals and assisting five in 1514 minutes of action. In his first season at the club, the striker notched 17 goals in 36 games in the Spanish top flight.

The former Defensor Sporting man was part of the Uruguay squad that reached the World Cup quarter finals, though he only managed 31 minutes in the defeat to France.
