Highly-rated Manchester United youngster Angel Gomes excited fans with a delightful piece of play last night.

The 17-year old starred as the Under 19's side defeated Serbian side Brodarac 2-0 away from home to reach the UEFA Youth League last 16, with one passage of play from the Under 17 World Cup winner catching the eye.

Receiving the ball just inside the area, Gomes, who is the cousin of former United winger Nani, turned several defenders inside and out with some mesmeric footwork - and would have scored a sensational solo goal had it not been for a brilliant save from goalkeeper Mihajlo Zravkovic.

The mazy run is the latest example of just why Gomes, the first player born in the 2000's to play in the Premier League, is tipped to touted as the next big thing at the club.

Having become the youngest player to pull on the Red Devils shirt since Duncan Edwards when he replaced Wayne Rooney on the final day of the 2016/17 season, the pint-sized midfielder was handed his first professional contract in December.

Expressing his delight after signing the deal, he told MUTV: "Manchester United has always been a big part of my life. I have been with the club since the age of six and it was a proud moment for me when I made my first team debut.

"This club is renowned for giving home grown players opportunities to progress into the first team and that was a major factor in me signing my first professional contract at this great club.

"I am still young but am looking forward to continuing my development with the help of the coaching staff and I will take every opportunity that comes my way."

There's confidence that Gomes has the talent to make the grade and be the latest player to come through the ranks and break through at Old Trafford, but Nicky Butt, the United legend now working as the head of the academy, says it won't happen overnight.

"It's not a case of signing the contract and going straight into the first team," he said, as quoted by the Manchester Evening News.

"He's a bright lad and he knows he has got a long way to go to stamp his authority in the first team. He needs to get in the reserves, settle in there, become a dominant player at reserve-team level and step up."

Gomes made his second United appearance in the 4-0 FA Cup drubbing of Yeovil Town in January and United fans will be hoping he takes to the field again at some point this season.
