UEFA Say Liverpool Won't Be Crowned Champions If Season Is Cancelled

UEFA Say Liverpool Won't Be Crowned Champions If Season Is Cancelled

UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin has hit out at 'fake news' over how league seasons would be decided if they're cancelled.

Teams who are currently leading their championships wouldn't be named as champions if the seasons were cancelled, according to UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin.

On Tuesday, Europe's football governing body met to decide what to do with the rest of the season and the summer Euros, amidst the current Covid-19 pandemic.

Euro 2020 was delayed to summer 2021 whilst UEFA also decided that the club season must finish by June 30th, leaving the possibility that leagues could be cancelled if they can't be finished by then.

However Ceferin has deemed the idea that league leaders will be handed the title as 'fake news.' "I've saw and heard some again fake news that Uefa will advise leagues to finish the championships now and decide that the winners are the ones who are number one now," the UEFA boss said.

"I can say that it's not true. Our goal is to finish the leagues and we didn't recommend anything like that to any association or any league."

Whilst it would obviously be ideal to finish the season and allow Liverpool to earn the final six points they need to win their first title in 30 years it would likely be seen as unfair to just hand them the title.

Handing Jurgen Klopp's team the league would also suggest that the rest of the positions currently in the league would have to stand, meaning sides not being given the chance to get out of the relegation zone, or into European places.

The Reds lead the Premier League by 25 points, though champions Manchester City have a game in hand, but elsewhere in Europe things at the top of the table are tighter.

In Spain Barcelona lead rivals Real Madrid by just two points in the race to La Liga and Spanish federation boss Luis Rubiales also denied that Barca would be given the title, saying, "The 19-20 season has to end with the same rules and not change, although the situation is exceptional.

"I cannot guarantee that the competition will end, as others have risked saying, before June 30. It is unfair that the competition ends with the classification as it is now."

The news means that there's an increasing chance the season could be null and void.
